My poster choice
This poster is of a person floating in outer space as they look across to the earths outline. This immediately gives the viewer an idea as to what the film is going to be about. The fact that the background is black, the earth is to the right and then in the middle the sun is breaking through and shining in brings an aspect of hope, life and optimism. It shows to the audience that the film is mainly going to be dark and nerve-wracking (because of the dark and black background) but the light implies that at the end something positive will come about. Also, because the sun is used to break apart the darkness on either side it suggests that before the character reaches a happy ending, the challenges they face will be very testing but like the sun, they will have to fight and persevere through.
As black is the main colour used in this poster, it shows it is a thriller; it suggests that it is going to be a mysterious film because the colour black is often associated with hidden meaning.
The billing on this poster is bold and stands out. The use of 'Sandra Bullock' and 'George Clooney' is known as borrowed identity, this helps to expand the audience base. Producers often put the stars name on the poster to entice more people in, especially if it is a new film. This is because, the first or only film of a franchise doesn't usually have that big of a fan base as it is not known, so producers use the actors name to reach out to more people. They know that people who like the actor may be more interested in the film, knowing that they are in it; this will benefit the film production because it will mean they make more money and thus increase their success.
The title 'Gravity' is also big and bold and one of the first things you see when looking at the poster. This immediately engages the audience because it gives them an idea of what the film is going to be about as gravity is often associated with both earth and space. So even without the background of the poster, viewers still have an idea of what is going to be focused on during the film solely from the title. This makes it easy for the audience to decide if they want to see the film.
The words 'don't let go' are written in a white font against a black background, this makes them clear and visible. They too provide a sense of mystery, it makes the audience wonder 'what shouldn't they let go of?' and this gives them a stronger eagerness and yearning to see it because despite having a vague idea of what the film is going to be about, they still have questions in their head as they try to analyse what they think could or might happen. This draws them in and makes the poster more memorable.
Even though the posters release date is not specific, it does say 'October', this is to help the audience because although it is a memorable poster, if there was no implication as to when the film is going to be released, the audience may forget and lose their eagerness to see it. Yet as it says 'October' it gives the audience some idea as to when they should look out for the films release.
